My house master sent a friend to call me, in his words I was to run to his lodge, I didn't know what was wrong, being a model student meant I wasn't called and told to run, only students who did something bad had to run when summoned.
While teju and I ran I asked, "guy how far, wetin happen" ,
"me self no sabi" he replied, we got to the lodge and knocked, "come in!" Mr Ade's thick voice came through, I was nervous, my mind kept wondering what I had actually done,
"Teju, you can go" he said, but his head kept facing the floor,
"Good afternoon sir" I greeted, but he didn't reply, he handed over his phone to me, my worries were gone, then fear came, something was definitely wrong, I took it from him slowly,
"Hello" I said,
"Hello teju, this is Officer Moshood" questions kept running through my mind, why was a police man on the other phone.
"Your father was involved in an accident along lagos-ibadan express way....." He paused after telling me, that moment my brain stopped working, only one thing came to mind, "
what happened?" I asked,
Silence...
"A fuel tanker lost its brakes and spilled fuel all over the place, and scores of cars caught fire" I could tell officer moshood was trained to give bad news, he picked each word carefully,
"Could it have been avoided?" I asked
"Yes, if the road agencies regulated tanker movement times or if the vehicle had gone through series of inspections by the owners it wouldn't have occurred"
"Anything else?" I asked,
Silence...
"Yes your mother was caught in a crossfire that happened in bodija market Ibadan, she died immediately" he said, this time I could hear the empathy in his words, tears rolled down my eyes, I was orphaned in one day ,
"Could it have been avoided too?" I asked,
"Yes, police officials could have gone in to negotiate with the meat sellers whom they had problem with but they chose to do it with guns"
"So what does this mean?" I asked, more tears rolling,
Silence......
